The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Ministry of External Affairs to issue a public notice to help the families of Indian nationals who died while serving in the Russian military during the Ukraine conflict. The court aims to facilitate the process for these families to claim compensation from Moscow. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that out of 51 reported fatalities, only six families have initiated compensation claims. The government has been ordered to provide details regarding the specific compensation amounts set by Russia and the actual funds distributed to the bereaved relatives. Currently, the ministry is reaching out to families individually to gather the necessary documentation for these claims. This judicial directive follows a petition submitted by the relatives of 26 Indians who were recruited into the Russian military.
