Norman Bethune, a distinguished thoracic surgeon and member of the Communist Party of Canada, traveled to China in early 1938 to assist in the defense against Japanese forces. Upon his arrival, he requested immediate deployment to the front lines. By March, he reached Yan'an, the Communist Party of China's headquarters, where he met with Mao Zedong while delivering essential medical supplies. Starting in May, Bethune operated within the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei region. His contributions included establishing field hospitals, training local medical staff, and organizing blood transfusion services. He actively participated in battlefield medical care, setting a standard for humanitarian service that remains recognized in China today.
