A fire incident at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Telangana's Adilabad district resulted in the deaths of two newborns on Monday. The blaze originated late at night when an air-conditioning unit located in the reception area detonated. Thick smoke quickly filled the enclosed newborn care ward, prompting staff and family members to shatter glass windows to facilitate ventilation and evacuation. While medical personnel and nurses successfully rescued 28 other infants, several staff members sustained injuries during the emergency response. The two deceased infants were aged four and five days respectively. Following the evacuation, the surviving children were relocated to alternative facilities for continued care. Local health officials confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the rapid accumulation of smoke within the sealed unit posed a significant challenge during the rescue efforts.
