A coroner's inquiry into a fatal fire in Hougang has established that the deceased family members were hoarders who had previously rejected intervention from the Housing and Development Board. The incident, which occurred on January 9, 2025, at a third-floor apartment on Hougang Street 91, originated from a wall socket in the master bedroom. The victims included 62-year-old Lee Choon Geak, who succumbed to smoke inhalation, his 56-year-old wife Seow Siew Choo, and their 18-year-old daughter Grace Lee Jia Wei, who died from asphyxia. Local residents alerted emergency services after observing smoke emanating from the unit around midday. State Coroner Adam Nakhoda has scheduled the next session for October 12, during which a forensic pathologist is expected to provide additional technical findings regarding the tragedy.
