Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have petitioned the chief judicial magistrate for search warrants targeting journalist Tongam Rina, activist Tajon, and youth leader Otul Jerang. This legal action follows unrest in Pasighat on October 23, where demonstrators protesting the 12,500-megawatt Upper Siang hydroelectric project engaged in vandalism. During the incident, an office belonging to the state-run National Hydroelectric Power Corporation and a local police station were set ablaze after security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. In the aftermath of the violence, law enforcement officials have already taken 69 individuals into custody and detained four others. The proposed power plant on the Siang river has faced significant opposition from various local groups, leading to the recent escalation in tensions and the subsequent police investigation into those allegedly involved in the disturbances.
