A dairy farming family in Assam's Nepali Khuti village suffered catastrophic losses after severe flash floods submerged their home and livestock. Krishna Prasad Sharma, who lost 23 of his 24 Jersey cows to drowning, described the event as a total collapse of his primary livelihood. The flood, triggered by intense rainfall in the Brahmaputra river basin, claimed over 100 lives across the state and impacted more than one million animals. While the family survived due to the intervention of neighbors, the loss of their herd has left them facing years of economic recovery. With nearly 40% of Assam classified as flood-prone, the disaster highlights the increasing vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events, which are exacerbated by rapid regional development and the state's limited flood protection infrastructure.
