The Nepalese government has introduced the Free Legal Aid Bill, 2083, to the House of Representatives, aiming to provide legal assistance to marginalized citizens. Spearheaded by Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, the legislation seeks to establish a comprehensive framework involving federal, provincial, and local authorities. This initiative includes the creation of a National Legal Aid Council alongside various regional and district-level committees to oversee operations. To support this expanded structure, the government anticipates an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 136.76 million. A significant portion of this funding, specifically Rs 43.72 million, is earmarked for staffing requirements, including the deployment of officer-level personnel across all 77 districts and non-gazetted staff in 65 districts. This bill represents a strategic effort to broaden the reach and accessibility of legal support services throughout the country.
