Thousands of employees in Bangladesh's critical garment sector engaged in widespread demonstrations today, blocking major transit routes and clashing with law enforcement. The protesters are calling for a monthly minimum wage that more than doubles their current compensation. Significant unrest was reported in Gazipur, where vehicles were damaged, and in the Mirpur district, where police utilized tear gas to disperse crowds. These demonstrations persist despite a recent government commitment to form a wage board tasked with reviewing pay structures in the industry. As the world's second-largest clothing exporter, Bangladesh relies heavily on this sector for its export revenue and employment. Despite official efforts to address concerns through administrative channels, labor representatives remain dissatisfied, leading to continued instability across several key industrial manufacturing hubs.
