The lawsuit alleges that the company failed to notify authorities after its safety systems flagged the perpetrator of a February school shooting in Tumbler Ridge for discussions involving gun violence. Nine individuals, including children, were killed in the attack. The province is seeking financial damages for recovery costs, including school reconstruction and mental health services, while demanding policy changes regarding how the platform handles potentially violent content. Although OpenAI expressed regret for not alerting law enforcement, the lawsuit claims the company ignored internal recommendations to report the user. This case follows similar litigation from victims' families and other U.S. states, as OpenAI maintains that it cooperates with authorities when it identifies credible and imminent threats.
