Election administrators throughout California have voiced confusion and irritation following a directive from the United States Department of Justice. The federal agency has requested that county registrars isolate ballots suspected of being cast by noncitizens ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. The official correspondence, delivered last Friday, further demands the disclosure of private data, such as Social Security numbers, for approximately 20,000 individuals identified by the department. Under existing federal law, individuals who are not citizens are strictly prohibited from registering to vote or participating in electoral processes. Local officials are now grappling with the logistical and legal implications of these federal demands regarding voter records.
