Director May el-Toukhy has been awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for her latest feature, Woman Unknown. The film, which explores the life of a woman concealing a wartime past in post-Second World War Denmark, also secured the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Mathilde Arcel. The jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal and featuring filmmakers Kaouther Ben Hania and Shahrbanoo Sadat, recognized the production for its historical narrative. During the ceremony, el-Toukhy emphasized the importance of highlighting the stories of women often overlooked in historical accounts. The movie depicts the challenges faced by a housemaid named Marie, who attempts to safeguard her future while keeping her previous romantic involvement with a German soldier secret. This international co-production between Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia examines the societal pressures placed upon women during that era.
