Former Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng recently addressed public concerns regarding Indian nationals in Singapore establishing exclusive social networks and residential enclaves. Cheng noted that these groups often leverage internal connections to secure employment and influence management within their workplaces and housing estates. While acknowledging that such practices can cause friction among local residents, Cheng argued that this behavior is not unique to Singapore. He observed similar patterns of community formation among first-generation Indian immigrants in nations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. According to Cheng, these tendencies reflect a broader human inclination toward tribalism rather than being a phenomenon restricted to the city-state.
