The Turkish Ministry of Defense has announced its willingness to finalize a maritime border treaty with Egypt, asserting that such an arrangement would provide Cairo with significantly more maritime territory than a potential deal with Greece. This proposal emerges as diplomatic ties between Ankara and Cairo continue to strengthen, despite ongoing tensions regarding Turkey's existing maritime pact with Libya, which Egypt views as a violation of its sovereign rights. While Greece and Egypt established a partial maritime agreement in 2020 that Turkey considers invalid, discussions are currently underway to expand that boundary toward Cyprus. During a recent briefing, Turkish officials emphasized that any new agreement would be based on shared interests. Furthermore, the ministry expressed support for recent legislative developments within the Libyan House of Representatives, signaling a desire for regional cooperation despite complex overlapping claims in the Eastern Mediterranean.
