During the 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa achieved a decisive victory to become the party's Kathmandu district president. Thapa garnered 6,584 votes, representing 94.61 percent of the 6,959 valid ballots cast. His opponent, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, received 375 votes, accounting for 5.38 percent of the total. Out of 7,013 votes submitted, 54 were deemed invalid. Analysts noted that the result was expected due to the existing power structures within the organization. Although Khadgi, a former mathematics teacher to Thapa, has a long history with the party including roles as a district secretary and constituency president, he lacked the necessary institutional support to mount a serious challenge. This event highlights ongoing discussions regarding the state of internal democratic processes within Nepal's major political organizations.
