The UNESCO-recognized Hoi An Ancient Town is facing preservation challenges as residents struggle to maintain aging historic homes. Due to a scarcity of traditional yin-yang roof tiles, many property owners have resorted to using corrugated metal sheets and plastic tarps to address leaks caused by natural disasters and time. While authorities permit small, temporary awnings for lightwells, they prohibit the permanent installation of metal or tarp coverings, as these materials detract from the site's architectural integrity and aesthetic value. Local officials emphasize that lightwells are essential for ventilation and cultural character. Despite ongoing daily inspections and efforts by the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center to enforce regulations and assist with repairs, many structures remain in a state of disrepair, with makeshift solutions increasingly altering the historic skyline of the pedestrian zone.
