Punjab has experienced a significant increase in farm fire incidents, with more than 500 cases recorded in the last 72 hours. According to the Commission for Air Quality Management, the total number of stubble burning events reached 1,612 by November 2. While this figure is lower than the 2,262 cases reported during the same period last year, authorities anticipate a potential surge as wheat-sowing deadlines approach. The geographic focus of these fires is shifting from the Majha region to the Malwa area as harvesting operations intensify. Officials have initiated enforcement actions, including the imposition of environmental fines totaling over 29 lakh rupees, and have instructed district administrations to maintain strict vigilance. Despite the current lower cumulative count compared to previous years, concerns remain regarding the impact of peak harvesting on air quality throughout the state.
