Sri Lankan authorities have launched preliminary talks to create a comprehensive national framework aimed at shielding minors from cyberbullying, digital exploitation, and various online hazards. This initiative, titled the Initiative for Child Online Safety and Digital Wellbeing, involves collaboration across seven government ministries to ensure a unified approach to protecting young internet users. The discussions, led by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, serve as a foundational step for a broader policy roadmap. A finalized proposal is slated for presentation at a ministerial roundtable on December 16, 2026, which will be presided over by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. These efforts are intended to prepare the nation for the upcoming Regional Summit on Child Online Safety and Wellbeing, which is currently scheduled to take place in January 2027.
