Iliana Yotova has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman elected as president of Bulgaria. Following a runoff election, she secured 58.1% of the vote against challenger Andrey Gyurov. Yotova, who previously served as vice president and assumed the presidency in January after Rumen Radev’s resignation, received support from the Progressive Bulgaria party. Her campaign emphasized a diplomatic approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for a peace-focused strategy rather than continued military aid. This stance distinguished her from her opponent, who favored closer alignment with NATO and EU military support policies. Having served in the European Parliament and as a long-term vice president, Yotova now begins her first full mandate as the nation's head of state, aiming to foster national consensus and maintain independent foreign policy decision-making amid ongoing domestic political instability.
