The Japanese government is introducing a loan program aimed at companies that specialize in the renovation and repurposing of vacant homes, known as akiya. This initiative seeks to address the growing issue of abandoned housing across the country. Projections indicate that by 2043, the number of unoccupied dwellings not currently listed for sale or rent could reach approximately 6 million units. This figure would account for more than 8% of the total national housing stock. By providing financial assistance to businesses involved in revitalizing these properties, authorities hope to mitigate the risks associated with the rising volume of neglected real estate and encourage the productive reuse of existing infrastructure.
