Employees of the Taiwanese snack manufacturer Kuai Kuai held a demonstration outside the Presidential Office to protest the sale of their Zhongli factory site. The union representing these workers claims the parent company, San-Ti Group, profited significantly from the NT$5.672 billion land deal while neglecting the welfare of long-term staff. With the factory slated to move to Hsinchu, many employees face impractical commutes, leading to concerns that the company is encouraging voluntary resignations to avoid severance payments. The union is now demanding compensation exceeding legal requirements and has threatened a strike. The Ministry of Labor has intervened, urging the company to engage in transparent negotiations and uphold its corporate social responsibility. This incident highlights broader concerns regarding the displacement of traditional manufacturing sites due to rising land values driven by the expansion of the AI and semiconductor sectors.
