As Israel approaches its upcoming general election, many Lebanese residents remain pessimistic regarding the potential for a shift in regional policy. Despite the possibility of a new government replacing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citizens in Beirut argue that the core Israeli approach toward Lebanon, characterized by military occupation and infrastructure destruction, is unlikely to change. Analysts note that no major Israeli political figures have committed to a withdrawal from southern Lebanon. While a 2026 survey indicates divided opinions on diplomatic versus armed strategies, a vast majority of the Lebanese population continues to view Israel as an adversary. Furthermore, skepticism is fueled by the record of opposition leaders like Gadi Eisenkot, who is associated with aggressive military doctrines. Consequently, the prevailing sentiment in Lebanon is that internal Israeli political transitions will not mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis or the occupation of their territory.
