Residents of Chandisthan in the Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality of Chitwan have successfully addressed chronic landslide issues using traditional Chepang knowledge. Previously, the community faced constant threats from soil erosion and falling debris during rainy weather, which endangered local farms and settlements. By implementing indigenous conservation methods, the area has seen a significant transformation. Amrit Gurung, head of the Chandisthan Community Forest, reports that soil erosion in a major landslide-prone zone has decreased by approximately 95 percent over the past three years. The once-unstable terrain is now covered with vegetation, and the soil has stabilized, effectively removing the persistent danger that formerly plagued the village whenever clouds gathered overhead. This initiative highlights the efficacy of integrating ancestral wisdom with modern environmental management to protect vulnerable mountainous communities from natural disasters.
