Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan informed the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia is approaching a proposal to co-chair The Hague Group with South Africa with significant caution. The minister highlighted that Malaysia’s current status as a non-party to specific international conventions, including the Rome Statute, presents legal hurdles. Accepting a leadership role within this platform could potentially create conflicts with the Federal Constitution. While Malaysia has been actively involved in the group to exert pressure on Israel regarding the Palestinian situation, the government maintains that its current capacity as a co-sponsor and principal participant is sufficient. Officials emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of the legal implications before committing to any formal leadership position that might necessitate adherence to international legal instruments the country has not yet ratified.
