Malaysian Investment Development Authority chairman Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz proposed that the principles of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 could serve as a model for the next phase of Asean economic integration. Launched in 2023, the NIMP 2030 framework focuses on enhancing economic complexity, promoting technological integration, achieving net-zero emissions, and ensuring economic security. Tengku Zafrul highlighted Asean's strategic geographic position between major global markets, noting its significant trade routes, expanding digital sectors, and diverse talent availability. The region has seen a substantial increase in foreign direct investment, reaching US$226 billion in 2024, which represents nearly double the figures recorded in 2015. These developments underscore the potential for Asean to leverage structured industrial planning to further its regional economic goals.
