A 26-year-old individual from Beruwala was apprehended by officials from the Udawalawe National Park's Panahaduwa Range Protection Office on October 14. The arrest occurred during an operation involving the attempted sale of a leopard tooth for 50,000 rupees. Following his appearance at the Matara Additional Magistrate’s Court, the suspect was granted release on two bail bonds valued at 200,000 rupees each. The legal proceedings are set to resume on December 11. Wildlife officials reminded the public that the Sri Lankan leopard is a strictly protected species under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. Consequently, any form of trade, possession, or display of parts from these animals is prohibited by law.
