Malaysia has secured the top position in the 2026 Global Relocation Index for retirees, achieving a score of 75.8. Compiled by the Singaporean consultancy Rumavi, the index evaluates nations based on factors including healthcare quality, cost of living, and tax policies. Malaysia’s high ranking is attributed to its affordability and favorable foreign-income tax treatment, though the report notes challenges regarding street safety and legal frameworks. Other Southeast Asian nations also performed well, with Thailand ranking fourth and the Philippines eighth globally. The assessment utilized 24 distinct metrics to determine suitability for retirees, penalizing countries that lack specific retirement visa programs. While Malaysia leads for retirees, it also holds the top spot for digital nomads. Other regional participants in the top 100 include Brunei, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Laos, reflecting the area's growing appeal for international relocation.
