The Nepalese government is launching initiatives to bolster disaster preparedness by expanding flood early warning systems across six major river basins. Through the Ministry of Energy, authorities plan to implement the GLOF-Sanjeevani project, which aims to lower water levels in four high-risk glacial lakes between 2026 and 2033 to prevent catastrophic outbursts. This effort, backed by a 49.9 million USD budget, builds on previous successful mitigation projects. Furthermore, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology is integrating artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to improve forecast accuracy. Plans include upgrading weather stations to automatic systems, installing new radar technology, and establishing radiosonde centers. To ensure public safety, the government intends to disseminate real-time weather and flood alerts directly to vulnerable communities via mobile applications, social media, and dedicated communication channels, thereby minimizing potential damage from climate-induced disasters.
