Penang Port Sdn Bhd has officially implemented the nation's inaugural private 5G network, a significant step in its transition toward smart port operations. Developed in partnership with Altel Communications Sdn Bhd, the infrastructure covers the North Butterworth Container Terminal and the Butterworth Deep Water Wharves across a 2.5-square-kilometre area. According to acting CEO Fakhrul Azhar Tajudin, the system functions independently from public mobile networks, with all core applications housed directly on-site. This configuration allows the port to maintain full oversight of its operational data and network performance. Furthermore, the localized architecture enhances communication speed, data security, and sovereignty, providing the facility with a robust technological foundation for future digital advancements.
