Reddit has formally challenged Australia’s legislative ban on social media access for individuals under 16, labeling the policy as ineffective and poorly constructed. During a two-day High Court hearing, the platform’s legal team argued that the 2024 law restricts the constitutional right to political communication by preventing minors from engaging in online discussions. The company also contested its designation as an age-restricted service under the new regulations. While the Australian government maintains that these measures are essential to shield youth from harmful content and addictive platform features, the legal challenge questions the constitutionality of the restrictions. Since the law's implementation in December 2025, approximately five million accounts have been deactivated across ten major platforms. The court proceedings are expected to conclude on Wednesday, focusing on whether the legislation infringes upon implied freedoms of expression.
