Since the local elections held in March 2024, forty mayors affiliated with the Republican People's Party (CHP) have faced arrest in Turkey. According to a report by İlke TV, these legal actions have resulted in the suspension of various elected officials and the subsequent installation of government-appointed trustees to manage municipal affairs. While this total includes individuals who have been released, the investigations span major urban centers such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Mersin. Authorities have leveled diverse accusations against these officials, including bribery, corruption, and alleged connections to terrorist groups. The most recent judicial actions occurred on October 6, involving the pretrial detention of four CHP mayors in Mersin due to claims of administrative irregularities. These developments highlight ongoing tensions between the central government and opposition-led local administrations throughout the country.
