Villagers in southern Lebanon are facing uncertainty as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) prepares to conclude its mission on December 31. Established following the 1978 Israeli invasion, the peacekeeping force has become an integral part of local life in towns like Ibl al-Saqi. Residents report that the departure will significantly damage the regional economy, as many small businesses depend heavily on trade with UN personnel. Beyond financial concerns, the community highlights deep social connections formed over decades, including numerous marriages between locals and international troops. There is also widespread apprehension regarding the potential loss of regional stability and security once the buffer force departs. For many, the peacekeepers represent more than just a military presence, serving as a vital link to international support and a cornerstone of the local social fabric.
