A study conducted by researchers at the Tianjin University of Sport suggests that brief intervals of movement can counteract the vascular damage caused by prolonged sitting. Published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, the research reviewed 24 clinical trials involving 454 individuals. The findings indicate that engaging in two to three minutes of lower-body exercise every 20 to 30 minutes enhances blood circulation and helps maintain healthy vessel function. Recommended activities include walking, stair climbing, calf raises, or performing half-squats. These movements help address the reduction in shear stress—the friction of blood against vessel walls—which typically occurs during extended periods of inactivity. By incorporating these frequent, short bouts of activity into a workday, individuals can effectively mitigate the cardiovascular risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
