The Nepalese government has announced plans to construct or upgrade morgue facilities at twelve federal hospitals and health science academies. Each of these new units will be designed to hold a minimum of 50 bodies, a move intended to enhance the nation's ability to handle mass casualty events. This policy decision, led by the Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene, follows challenges faced during previous emergencies, such as the recent flooding in Bhotekoshi. Minister Nisha Mehta emphasized that these improvements are vital for disaster readiness and the efficient management of human remains. Beyond increasing storage capacity, the initiative aims to improve forensic medicine capabilities, facilitate the identification of victims, and ensure that legal procedures are conducted more effectively during times of crisis.
