Sri Lankan authorities have alerted the public to a sophisticated phishing campaign targeting the official GOV PAY platform. Criminals are distributing deceptive links through WhatsApp and SMS, leading unsuspecting motorists to a counterfeit website that impersonates the Digital Economy Ministry’s legitimate payment portal. This fraudulent site is designed to illicitly harvest sensitive personal data and misappropriate funds from users attempting to settle traffic fines. Deputy Inspector General W. P. J. Senadheera clarified that the government has not authorized any alternative payment channels or external websites for this service. Officials are urging citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid interacting with suspicious digital messages, and refrain from entering private information into unverified platforms. The government continues to emphasize that the official system remains the only secure method for processing these specific road safety payments.
