Starting November 1, the Taipei City government will enforce a total smoking ban within the Xinyi Shopping District, specifically surrounding the MRT Taipei City Hall station. Individuals caught smoking in this designated zone, which spans from Songren Road to Keelung Road, face potential fines ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$10,000. A one-month grace period begins this Thursday, during which health officials will educate the public on the new regulations. To support this initiative, the city has introduced two additional negative-pressure smoking rooms near the station, bringing the municipal total to 12. Mayor Chiang Wan-an acknowledged the contribution of civic organizations in funding these facilities. According to the Department of Health, these specialized smoking areas have already seen over 500,000 visits since their initial rollout in May, reflecting the city's ongoing efforts to promote a smoke-free environment.
