Thailand’s Election Commission is under intense scrutiny after deciding to prosecute only 77 individuals regarding the 2024 Senate selection process. Among those referred to court, only 26 are currently serving senators, while all political officeholders, including ministers and party executives, were excluded from the proceedings. The People’s Party, led by Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, has condemned the decision, arguing that the commission ignored evidence of a coordinated conspiracy. The opposition party plans a multi-faceted legal and parliamentary response, alleging that the commission’s selective approach constitutes an abuse of power. Critics contend that the evidence, which includes financial records, phone logs, and voting data, points to a systemic effort to influence state institutions. Consequently, commissioners now face potential criminal complaints under Section 157 of the Criminal Code and investigations by the National Anti-Corruption Commission for their handling of the case.
