Turkish prosecutors have requested a prison sentence of five years and four months for journalist İsmail Arı. The Ankara 32nd Criminal Court of First Instance has formally accepted an indictment accusing the BirGün reporter of insulting others and spreading misleading information online. These charges stem from social media posts regarding an ongoing investigation into an investment fund, specifically involving references to Ebubekir Şahin, the former head of Turkey's broadcasting regulator, RTÜK. Arı has been held in pretrial detention since October 21 following a legal complaint filed by Şahin. The court has mandated that the journalist remain in custody until his initial trial date, which is currently set for November 19. The prosecution claims that Arı's digital content implied an improper connection between the former regulator official and individuals implicated in the financial probe.
