Two Members of Parliament from the Workers' Party are set to address the government regarding the introduction of driverless ride-hailing services in Singapore. With Waymo planning to deploy an all-electric, autonomous fleet by 2028 following an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Authority, concerns have emerged regarding the future of the local transport sector. MPs Louis Chua and Jamus Lim intend to seek clarification on the regulatory framework governing these self-driving vehicles and how they will differ from existing ride-hailing rules. A primary focus of their inquiry is the potential economic impact on the nation's workforce, which includes more than 70,000 taxi and private-hire vehicle operators. This initiative marks the first deployment of such technology in Southeast Asia, prompting legislative scrutiny over the long-term consequences for traditional driving professions.
