Zheng’an, located in China’s Guizhou province, has rapidly transformed into a major international hub for guitar production. The town, which features prominent guitar-themed architecture and public art, now manufactures approximately one out of every seven guitars sold globally. This industrial growth is particularly notable given that the region lacked a significant musical instrument sector just ten years ago. The town's development serves as a prime illustration of China’s industrial strategy, which leverages coordinated local and central government investment to capitalize on specific regional advantages. While China hosts numerous specialized manufacturing centers for various goods, the swift expansion of Zheng’an’s guitar industry highlights the effectiveness of state-backed economic planning in establishing dominant market positions within a relatively short timeframe.
