A recent analysis conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms reveals that 31% of Rajya Sabha members have disclosed pending criminal cases in their election affidavits. Out of 230 parliamentarians examined, 72 reported facing legal charges, with 16% of the total group specifically noting serious criminal allegations. The watchdog defines these serious offenses as non-bailable crimes, those resulting in public financial loss, or charges carrying potential prison sentences of five years or longer. Additionally, the report highlights a significant concentration of wealth within the Upper House, noting that 14% of the analyzed members possess assets valued at over Rs 100 crore. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the legal and financial profiles of current representatives, excluding 11 members who were recently elected in October.
