Joanna Wietrzyk, a world record-holding Hyrox athlete, revealed she contemplated leaving the sport due to severe online bullying. The backlash followed a viral incident during a Beijing competition last month, where she continued racing despite suffering from diarrhoea. In a recent interview, Wietrzyk described the subsequent weeks as emotionally draining, noting that the harassment extended to her family members through threats. While acknowledging that continuing the race was a poor judgment call, she emphasized that the level of public scrutiny and vitriol she faced was disproportionate. To cope with the negative attention, the athlete temporarily withdrew from social media and sought isolation. She is now preparing to return to competition in Hamburg, Germany, after enduring what she characterized as a deeply taxing period for her mental health.
