The central government in Beijing has officially relieved Winnie Ho Wing-yin of her duties as Hong Kong’s Secretary for Housing. This move follows her recent resignation, which was submitted to take political accountability for a fatal fire that occurred in the Tai Po district. Acting on a proposal from Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, the State Council confirmed the dismissal on Tuesday. While the official announcement from Xinhua News Agency did not specify a replacement or provide detailed reasoning, Lee noted that Ho’s departure was a gesture of taking responsibility for the tragedy. The administration has yet to announce who will take over the housing portfolio.
