The 1996 Ganga water-sharing agreement between India and Bangladesh is set to expire later this year, prompting the Indian state of Bihar to push for a review of its specific water requirements. This bilateral pact regulates the distribution of river water at the Farakka barrage, specifically addressing the dry season between January and June. Current provisions mandate an equal split if flow levels drop below 70,000 cubic feet per second. For higher flow volumes, the treaty outlines specific guaranteed allocations for both nations, including a fixed 35,000 cusecs for Bangladesh during certain ten-day periods. As the renewal process approaches, Bihar officials are seeking to address long-standing concerns regarding the state's own water needs within the framework of this international arrangement.
