Air travel in the United Kingdom began to recover on Wednesday following a widespread air traffic control outage that caused the cancellation of over 1,000 flights. While services are resuming, airports like Heathrow and Gatwick have warned passengers to expect continued disruptions as airlines work to reposition crews and aircraft. The incident has prompted Transport Minister Heidi Alexander to summon NATS chief Martin Rolfe to explain the technical failure, which follows previous system issues in 2023 and 2025. NATS has ruled out cyberattacks as the cause of the disruption. Meanwhile, major carriers including Ryanair have criticized the reliability of British airspace management, calling for leadership changes and increased investment in infrastructure. NATS, a public-private entity, is currently facing intense scrutiny regarding its operational resilience and the allocation of its financial resources.
