Federal authorities in the United States apprehended 34-year-old Wanying Zhang at Los Angeles International Airport as she prepared to board a flight to China. According to a federal complaint, Zhang, a resident of Irvine, is accused of operating as an unregistered agent for the People's Republic of China. Officials allege that in 2025, she traveled to Seattle to conduct surveillance on a relative of a Taiwanese government representative under the guidance of Chinese authorities. The suspect reportedly transmitted images, video footage, and vehicle identification data to her handlers while employing tactics to evade discovery. Furthermore, she is charged with failing to register with the US Attorney General as a foreign government representative. Zhang is scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles federal court to face these allegations.
