A former professor at the University of Tokyo, Shinichi Sato, has been handed a suspended prison sentence for accepting illicit entertainment valued at approximately ¥1.83 million. Between March 2023 and August 2024, Sato received these favors from the former director of the Japan Cosmetic Association in exchange for facilitating joint research projects, including studies on cannabis-derived compounds for skin conditions. Judge Hiroshi Ikegami condemned the actions for undermining professional integrity and public trust. Sato, who was dismissed from the institution following his arrest, admitted to the charges and expressed regret for his conduct. This ruling follows the earlier conviction of the association's former director and a separate suspended sentence handed to a former associate professor involved in the same bribery scheme. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the total value of the received entertainment.
