Environmental organization Greenpeace has requested that the Hong Kong government reassess its ecotourism management following significant overcrowding at the Po Pin Chau hiking trail in Sai Kung. During the recent National Day holiday, the site experienced heavy foot traffic despite the implementation of a reservation system. The group reported that the influx of visitors led to environmental degradation, including soil erosion, damaged vegetation, and substantial littering. Furthermore, the organization noted instances of improper waste disposal and reports of tourists defecating at the location. Consequently, Greenpeace is advocating for a reduction in visitor quotas to mitigate further harm to the natural landscape and ensure the site's preservation amidst rising tourism pressures.
