Turkish law enforcement officials apprehended Mithat Bülent Özmen, the mayor of Istanbul’s Eyüpsultan district, alongside 27 additional individuals on Friday. This action follows an investigation led by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into allegations of bribery, bid-rigging, and participation in a criminal organization. Police conducted searches at various premises associated with the suspects as part of the inquiry. This development occurs shortly after a separate operation in Mersin province resulted in the detention of 59 people, including three other municipal leaders. Mayor Özmen, a representative of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), had secured his position in the 2024 local elections within a district historically recognized for its religious and conservative significance.
