Hurricane Lowell brought severe winds and heavy rainfall to Hawaii's island of Kauai, leading to significant disruption. Approximately 30,000 residents experienced power loss, impacting nearly 92 percent of the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative's customers. Although the storm, which weakened to a Category 1 hurricane, did not make direct landfall, passing about 128 kilometers west, its intense gusts of up to 137 kilometers per hour caused extensive damage. Trees and power lines were downed, and coastal roads suffered flooding, necessitating the evacuation of around 300 individuals. Mayor Derek Kawakami confirmed widespread destruction, and local authorities advised residents to remain sheltered to facilitate damage assessment and restoration efforts. While hurricane warnings for Kauai and Niihau were lifted, dangerous surf and rip currents are expected to persist along Hawaii's coasts for a couple more days, with remnants also impacting Southern California.
