Senator Sherwin Gatchalian and Senator Joel Villanueva have called for sustained efforts to enhance the Philippine education system following the country's improved performance in the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). While the Philippines achieved its highest scores to date in mathematics, science, and reading, the senators emphasized that these gains should serve as a catalyst for deeper systemic changes. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development noted that the nation is the fastest-improving in reading proficiency. Lawmakers credited the Department of Education and the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) for driving these advancements through targeted initiatives like the Excellence in Teacher Education Act. Villanueva stressed the necessity of ongoing investment in teacher training and school resources to maintain this upward trajectory and address the underlying learning crisis.
